How do braces work?
Brackets and wires gently shift your teeth into alignment over time
Brackets are bonded to your teeth. A wire is secured to the bracket on each tooth. Tension is applied to the wire between teeth, pulling or pushing each tooth into alignment. Wires have their tension adjusted every six to eight weeks throughout your treatment. This ensures your teeth are moving according to your treatment plan, to achieve the result you want.
Types of braces
There are several types of braces available. These fall into six main categories:
Suitable for children, teens and adults, Yorkshire Dental Suite orthodontists provide a wide range of safe and effective teeth straightening treatments not available from NHS clinicians.
- Metal braces: this type of brace sits on the front of your teeth and pushes teeth into alignment
- Ceramic braces: Tooth coloured brackets and frosted wires that minimise visibility
- Lingual braces: this type of brace is attached to the inside of your teeth, pushing teeth into alignment
- Clear aligners: a series of almost invisible, removable clear plastic retainers that push teeth into alignment
- Pallet expander sits across the roof of your mouth, pushing teeth outwards to better fill your jaw
- Head gear: an addition to other treatments, head gear pulls teeth into alignment
Am I eligible for braces?
To be immediately eligible for braces with Yorkshire Dental Suite you should have good oral hygiene and have no gum disease, cavities or receding gums
Any issues discovered during your consultation and scans will need to be resolved before you can proceed with treatment.
How long do braces take?
The length of your treatment is determined by the complexity of your case and how long it will take to move your teeth into alignment
- Mild: around 4-6 months
- Moderate: around 6-12 months
- Severe: around 8-16 months
- Complex: 12 months+
Once treatment is complete you will need to wear retainers while you sleep to maintain straight teeth.
What is an orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a specially trained and accredited dentist who is qualified to provide certain teeth straightening treatments.
Some treatments such as clear aligners do not need an orthodontist and can be administered by a dentist.
