What are lingual braces?
Hidden fixed appliances that fit the modern lifestyle
Do you find that visible ‘train-track’ braces or removable aligners are not suitable for your lifestyle, but you still need orthodontics? Lingual braces are the perfect solution.
At Yorkshire Dental Suite, we specialise in bespoke lingual systems that are custom-engineered to follow the unique contours of your teeth. This completely invisible treatment straightens the teeth using brackets and a thin metal wire that sits on the back of your teeth.
By applying pressure to the teeth, they are encouraged to gradually shift into their correct position. This makes lingual braces extremely effective when treating malocclusions, including complex rotations and vertical tooth movements.
Advantages of lingual braces
Invisible treatment. Exceptional accuracy.
This popular orthodontic treatment offers many benefits to patients.
Zero visibility
Nicknamed 'invisible braces', lingual braces allow you to work, socialise and continue everyday life with total confidence.
Decalcification protection
Any ‘white spots’ that occasionally occur with braces are hidden on the inside of the teeth. This protects your smile’s aesthetics.
Continuous progress
Unlike clear aligners, lingual braces don’t rely on the discipline of the patient. As they are fixed, they are working to straighten your teeth 24/7.

The technology behind hidden lingual braces
Lab-crafted execution and orthodontic expertise combine
Using CAD/CAM, a type of software that supports the design and manufacturing process of orthodontic appliances, your custom-made lingual braces are designed. This process is carried out in Yorkshire Dental Suite’s state-of-the-art lab, before being fitted to your teeth by one of our world-class orthodontists.
Please note that lingual braces are a specialist orthodontic treatment. Suitability depends on your specific dental anatomy and bite. A clinical assessment with a GDC-registered specialist is mandatory before treatment.
Invisalign and braces vs lingual braces
World-class teeth straightening for every smile and bite
Wondering which type of brace is the most suitable for you? There are numerous factors to take into consideration. When discussing the effectiveness of treatments, studies indicate that lingual appliances are just as effective as labial (front) braces for most malocclusions.

Lingual braces FAQs
Still have questions?
Yorkshire Dental Suite’s team of orthodontists answer the most common questions we receive from patients. If your query isn’t addressed, do not hesitate to contact us. We will help in every way possible.
Because the brackets are near the tongue, you may notice a slight lisp for the first 7 - 10 days following your fitting. Most patients adapt fully within two weeks as the tongue "learns" its new position.
Yes. The cost reflects the advanced laboratory work, the custom-made nature of every single bracket, and the specialist training required by the orthodontist. Yorkshire Dental Suite’s price for lingual braces start from £3,495 (single arch), going up to £5,995 for complex dual-arch cases.
Modern lingual brackets are extremely low-profile (very thin). While there is an initial adjustment period for your tongue, they are designed to be as smooth as possible. If you experience discomfort, consider applying dental wax to the problem area.
Invisalign doesn’t require an orthodontist. We don’t know if it’s cheaper because Invisalign do not advertise the cost of their treatment on their website. Instead, local dentists who offer Invisalign can charge whatever they want, making the treatment’s pricing a bit of a lottery.
This depends on the condition being treated. Rest assured, you will be told your estimated treatment time during your initial consultation.
Yes - they are just as effective as standard metal braces (without the inconvenience of visible train tracks). They are used to fix a number of common dental issues, including overbites, gaps and crowded teeth.
Avoid hard, chewy foods that can damage your braces. Examples include toffee, boiled sweets, crusty rolls and crisps. Instead, choose foods that can be cut up into small pieces for ease of chewing. Another way in which you may prevent damage to your dental braces is by avoiding chewing pens and other non-food items.
The term ‘social lingual brace’ describes a treatment that targets the front 6 - 8 teeth. It is most commonly used for mild overcrowding and small gaps, and takes a few months to a year to complete. In comparison, a standard lingual braces treats the whole mouth or bottom arch of teeth. This treatment, which can take a few years to complete, is much more versatile, addressing gaps, crooked teeth, crowding and underbites.
Lingual braces can be worn at any age. If you play contact sports or use a musical instrument, remember to wear a mouthguard to protect the braces (and teeth).
